This inchoate Brigade, was set on foot by particular friends of mine some time ago. I expect they will have to be completed by consolidation. I wish the very best done for them that can be consistently with the public service A. LINCOLN

[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Major Augustus H. Chapman, Charleston, Illinois, December 17, 1861, asking certain appointments to be made in the ``Kentucky Brigade.'' Chapman was a major in the Fifty-fourth Illinois regiment of that brigade.
