This appointment I suppose can be made with propriety.

Dec. 16. 1861. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES-P, ISLA. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Joshua F. Speed and Robert Mallory, December 14, 1861, requesting appointment of William P. Graves as a first or second lieutenant on the staff of Brigadier General William Nelson. In Speed's letter Lincoln also inserted a phrase as follows: ``in order to be appointed aid-de camp.'' Graves was appointed second lieutenant March 24, 1862. See Lincoln to Stanton, March 13, 1862, infra.
