My dear Sir: Dec. 16, 1861
I wish Hon: James H. Lane to be appointed a Brigadier General of Volunteers, to report to Gen: Hunter, and to be so assigned to duty as not to be under, over, or in immediate contact with Gen. Denver. Yours truly A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, IHi. Lane's appointment as brigadier from December 18, 1861, was cancelled March 21, 1862. His letter to Lincoln October 9, 1861, narrating his difficulties in enlisting the Kansas Brigade due to what he termed a conspiracy between Governor Charles Robinson and the commandant at Fort Leavenworth, concluded with the statement that if he could not have command of the new Department of Kansas and the Indian Territory he would be compelled to ``quit the field.'' For Lane's continuing difficulties, see Lincoln to Stanton, January 31, 1862, infra.
