Annotation

[1]   Isaac Markens, Abraham Lincoln and the Jews (1909), p. 9. Dr. Fischel wished to be appointed chaplain of a New York regiment composed largely of Jews, but was informed by Secretary Cameron that the law provided only for ordained ministers of Christian denominations. On March 12, 1862, the law was amended to authorize employment of Jewish chaplains.
