Is it true that Schofield is, or is to be ordered East?
My expectation & wish was for him to remain in Mo.
Please answer. A. LINCOLN
Dec. 9. 1861.
Annotation
[1] AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a copy of a telegram from Governor Hamilton R. Gamble, December 7, 1861, to Edward Bates: ``Halleck tells me Schoefield is to be ordered East, he is now in actual
command of the Missouri State Militia. . . taking him away will postpone organization indefinitely.'' McClellan's endorsement follows Lincoln's: ``This is the first I have heard of it. There has not been any intention of ordering him away from Missouri.'' Brigadier General John M. Schofield remained in Missouri.
