Dear Sir: Please remember to confer with the Secretary of the Interior, so as to clear the discrepancy as to amounts derived from sale of public lands. Yours truly, A. LINCOLN.

[1] NH, VIII, 87. Secretary Chase replied on November 26: ``Secretary Smiths amount is probably right---the amount given by me certainly is.

``The discrepancy arises from the fact that the Treasury Statement is of moneys actually paid into the Treasury, and may include moneys received by officers of the Interior Department in the fiscal year 1861 & exclude moneys received in the fiscal year 1862, while the Interior Statement, is of moneys received by these
