Annotation

[1]   LS (copy?), DLC-RTL. See also Lincoln's record of dismissal of Key, September 26-27, supra, and endorsement of December 27, infra, which was written on the envelope containing this letter. The ``bundle of letters'' to which Lincoln refers have not been located.

[2]   Captain James (Joseph?) Rudd Key, Company I, Fiftieth Ohio Volunteers, died November 11, 1862, of wounds received at the battle near Perryville, Kentucky. There is some question as to his first name, both ``Joseph'' and ``James'' being given in the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio (IV, 577, 797), but the census of 1860, Cannelton, Indiana, lists James R. Key, age 16, as the son of John J. Key.
