I know not whether the within is admissable. If it is, I would, both on account of Gen. Banks and Col. Ullmann, be glad for it to be done. Will the Sec. of War, and Gen. Halleck please consider it.
Nov. 22. 1862 A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, DNA WR RG 108, HQA, B-1102, Box 57. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Nathaniel P. Banks, November 19, 1862, requesting that Colonel Daniel Ullmann of the Seventy-eighth New York Regiment ``with such Regiments as you may place under his command'' be assigned to Banks' expedition bound for Louisiana. No record has been found of Ullmann's transfer at this time, but on March 25, 1863, Stanton notified Banks that Ullmann, who had been made a brigadier general as of January 13, had been ``intrusted with authority'' to raise ``a large military force from the colored population of Louisiana . . . and directed to report to you. . . .'' (OR, III,III, 101-102).
