Annotation

[1]   AES, DNA RG 204, U.S. Pardon Attorney, A 449. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Governor Hamilton R. Gamble, November 18, 1862, asking a pardon for Confederate General Edwin R. Price, son of Confederate General Sterling Price. Edwin R. Price had been captured by Union forces, paroled, and later exchanged for General Benjamin S. Prentiss. Upon returning to the South, he resigned his commission and went home. Gamble concluded his letter, ``I venture to suggest that this is a case in which it will be expedient to grant a pardon . . . to this young man, who will as I believe be of service in keeping down the spirit of rebellion.''
