Annotation

[1]   AES, MH. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the following unsigned document:

``Four days since there were no other rebel soldiers at Culpepper Court House than a Provost guard under a captain.

``For the previous week it was said among the citizens there, that portions of the army were passing back that way from the valley. My informant, a young lady (Union) saw herself but about a single regiment marching near Culpepper C.H. in that direction, as most of them were understood to be going by the Amisville and other roads than the direct road through Culpepper C.H. I shall learn more of their movements in that direction this evening.''
