[1] ALS, NAuE. On October 25, Secretary Seward forwarded a letter from Theodore Canisius, consul at Vienna, October 4, 1862, as follows:
``General Baron Lenk, the best and most prominent artillery officer of the Austrian army desires to enter into our army, and he, therefore, requested me to offer to you his services.
``I have referred to Gen. Lenk in my dispatch of this day to the Secretary of Statex . . . . Men like the general we ought not to refuse . . . .''(DLC-RTL).
