Annotation
[1] AES, DNA RG 60, Papers of Attorney General, Appointments, Box 479. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Judge Bland Ballard, Louisville, Kentucky, October 9, 1862, recommending removal of U.S. Marshal Alexander H. Sneed for failure to render accounts, pay witnesses and jurors, and generally to perform his duties. Ballard also recommended Henry C. McDowell of Louisville to succeed Sneed. McDowell is listed as marshal in the Official Register for 1863.
