Annotation

[1]   AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a copy of a letter from Hannibal Hamlin, September 26, 1862, forwarded with a concurring note by Senator Lot M. Morrill, requesting investigation of the case of Captain Charles Weston, military storekeeper at the Watertown (Massachusetts) Arsenal, who had been summarily dismissed without a hearing. On October 21, Assistant Secretary of War Peter H. Watson sent Lincoln ``all the papers in the case'' and stated that ``An investigation of Weston's accounts, since his dismissal, discloses the fact that they were not only in arrears, but in great confusion, demonstrating conclusively his unfitness for the office.'' (DLC-RTL). On August 8, 1863, Weston wrote Lincoln thanking him for having revoked the order of dismissal: ``Through all these weary months, I never doubted, if you examined the case, you would do me justice.'' (Ibid.).
