Annotation
[1] AES, DLC-Cameron Papers. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a page containing copies of letters recommending appointment of George Cadwalader of Philadelphia as brigadier general. An endorsement by George B. McClellan of the same date reads in part, ``I cannot recommend the appointment. . . . If he be appointed . . . I would respectfully request that he may not be assigned to duty . . . under my command. . . . '' Cadwalader was not nominated to the Senate as major general until March 28, 1862, and was confirmed April 25.
