[1] AES, DLC-Cameron Papers. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from General James W. Denver, August 26, 1861, stating that although he had no objection to Samuel Gamage's and Charles R. Saunders' appointment to places `` . . . on the staff of the Cal. expedition . . . it is due to fair dealing to state that today Gen. Cameron, Sec. of War, told me . . . he had appointed Staff officers enough for the whole army and that he could make no new appointments until those already appointed were assigned to duty.'' See also Lincoln to Cameron August 17, supra, and September 4, infra, in regard to these appointments.
