I shall be gratified if Mr. Hertford can retain the place he now holds in the War Department. A. LINCOLN

Aug. 21, 1861

Annotation

[1]   AES, DLC-Cameron Papers. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Joseph Hertford, August 19, 1861. A temporary clerk in the War Department, friend of Leonard Swett and Ward H. Lamon and an ex-Chicagoan, Hertford apparently did not keep his War Department position, but in 1862 secured a place in the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
