My dear Sir August 17, 1861
These gentlemen---Samuel Gamage, and Charles R. Saunders---are Californians, who were well recommended for offices which have been given to others. I am now willing that they should be appointed Pay-Masters of Volunteers, as Californias. Yours truly
A. LINCOLN
