Please let Reuben B. Hatch of Illinois, be appointed an Assistant Quartermaster, and assigned to the Brigade of General Prentiss, in Illinois.

Also let Speed Butler of Illinois be appointed Commissary of Subsistence, and assigned to the Brigade of General Pope, in Illinois

Your obedient Servant ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

Annotation

[1]   LS, IHi. Reuben B. Hatch of Meredosia, Illinois, brother of Ozias M. Hatch, was appointed assistant quartermaster of Volunteers with rank of captain, August 3, 1861. Speed Butler, son of Lincoln's old friend William Butler, was appointed commissary of subsistence, August 3, 1861, and on September 1, became major of the Fifth Illinois Cavalry.
