Executive Mansion June 20th 1861.

I hereby authorize Major General B. F. Butler, if in his discretion he shall deem it necessary and advisable, to appoint Rev. C. W. Dennison a Chaplain of the Volunteer Hospital at Fortress Monroe, during such period of time and under such regulations as he shall prescribe. A. LINCOLN

[1] LS, DLC-Butler Papers. Reverend Charles W. Dennison was appointed hospital chaplain, but not until July 31, 1862, is the appointment of record.
