Annotation

[1]   AES, DLC-RTL. The endorsement is written on a letter from John Pope to Ward H. Lamon, April 11, 1861. Captain John Pope, son of Nathaniel Pope, serving as topographical engineer building lighthouses on the Great Lakes, suggested that `` . . . it would be well for Mr Lincoln to have near him some Army friend interested in him personally. . . . I would be gratified therefore if the President would order me to Washington . . . as his aid & military Secretary. . . . '' Cameron's endorsement reads: ``The Secretary of War thinks this a very modest request.'' (DLC-RTL). See also, Lincoln to Cameron, April 26, infra.
