[1] AE, DLC-RTL. The endorsement is written on the envelope enclosing letters from Horace Greeley, George Opdyke, David D. Field, and James S. Wadsworth, April 8, 1861. Greeley asked `` . . . the selection of a Surveyor of the Port who shall be in full accord and sympathy with the Collector already appointed. . . . The appointments made for this state . . . have generally been made from the other wing of the party. . . . '' (DLC-RTL). The surveyorship went to Rufus F. Andrews, whom Greeley had recommended on February 6 for district attorney for New York (ibid.).
