Annotation
[1] AES, DNA RG 48, Applications, Indian Agencies, Superintendent of Indian Affairs (Northern), Box 1266. The endorsement seems to have been clipped from the envelope and pasted on the back of Dubois' letter of March 17, 1861, requesting appointment of his son-in-law, James P. Luse, editor of the Lafayette, Indiana, Journal, as superintendent of Indian affairs for the Northern Superintendency. Clark W. Thompson of Minnesota received the appointment, however, and Luse later received the postmastership of Lafayette. See also Lincoln to Dubois, March 30, infra.
