My dear Sir---I herewith beg leave to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 4th inst. enclosing (documents Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) copies of correspondence and notes of conversation with the President of the United States and the Secretary of War, concerning various military movements, suggested by yourself, for the better protection of the Government and the maintainance of public order.

Permit me to renew to you the assurance of my high appreciation of the many past services you have rendered the Union, and of my deep gratification at this evidence of your present active exertions to maintain the integrity and honor of the nation.
