[1] ALS, DLC-Schurz Papers. Schurz had visited Lincoln on July 24, and doubtless expressed his wish for a copy of Douglas' speech at New Orleans. On August 22 he wrote Lincoln from New Albany, Indiana, that he had been ``for about three weeks . . . working the state of Ind. . . . '' and that he was returning the scrapbook (DLC-RTL).
