Annotation
[1] AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Thomas H. Clay, October 17, 1861, requesting appointment of Hiram Shaw of Lexington, and William V. Wolfe of Louisville, Kentucky, as paymasters. There is no record of either man's appointment as paymaster, but William V. Wolfe served as first lieutenant in the Fifteenth Kentucky Infantry.
