The allusions in the editorial, ``men who boast of stealing Negroes,'' and ``We want a man . . . who has never been indicted for stealing niggers or mail bags,'' probably refer on the one hand to abolitionist Republicans and on the other, to the then current Chicago post office investigation involving Isaac Cook, postmaster at Chicago who was a Buchanan Democrat purported to be in secret alliance with the Republicans against Douglas.
