H. C. Whitney, Esq Springfield
Nov. 30. 1858

My dear Sir:

Being desirous of preserving in some permanent form, the late joint discussions between Douglas and myself, ten days ago I wrote to Dr. Ray, requesting him to forward to me, by express, two sets of the Nos. of the Tribune, which contain the reports of those discussions. Up to date I have no word from him on the subject. Will you, if in your power procure them and forward them to me by Express? If you will, I will pay all charges, and be greatly obliged to boot.

Hoping to meet you before long I remain As ever your friend

A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS-P, ISLA. Whitney replied on December 8 that he had called on Ray, who said that he had never received Lincoln's letter, (vide supra, November 20) but that no papers were available except for the file. Whitney offered his own set and promised to try to get another (DLC-RTL). See Lincoln to Whitney, December 25, infra.
