Endorsement: William Porter to Lincoln1Jump to section
The writer of this is a man of excellent bussiness qualifications, and particularly versed in the business of the Land offices. If he could get the job of examiner as he desires, I should be much gratified. I know no other applicant. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, DNA NR RG 48. A resident of Sangamon County who had known Lincoln from his New Salem days, William Porter wrote a letter of application on June 10, assuming that Lincoln would certainly be appointed commissioner. Lincoln carried the letter to Washington, where he added his endorsement and filed the letter on June 23. See also Lincoln to Ewing, July 5, 1849, infra.
