Dear Sir: June 4th. 1849
I understand the President has determined to give the General Land Office to Illinois; and if you would quite as soon I should have it as any other Illinoian, I shall be grateful if you will write me to that effect at Washington, where I expect to be soon.
A private despach from thence, tells me the appointment has been postponed three weeks from the first Inst. for my benefit. No time to lose. Your Obt. Servt. A. LINCOLN
