Annotation

[1]   Illinois State Journal, August 19, 1858; Rushville Schuyler Citizen, August 18, 1858. The Journal gives the most complete available report, but the Citizen adds a summary of Lincoln's remarks on Negro equality. No contemporary report has been found, however, confirming the statement of Horace White that the passage on the Declaration of Independence which constitutes the major portion of the extant text of the speech at Lewistown, August 17 (vide infra, n.1), was actually delivered at Beardstown.

[3]   From the Schuyler Citizen.
