My dear Sir June 25- 1858

In 1856 you gave me authority to draw on you for any sum not exceeding five hundred dollars. I see clearly that such a privilege would be more available now than it was then. I am aware that times are tighter now than they were then. Please write me at all events; and whether you can now do anything or not, I shall continue grateful for the past. [1] ALS, ICHi. This letter is incorrectly dated January 25, 1858, in Hertz, II, 707. Alexander Campbell, a leading Republican of LaSalle, Illinois, was elected state representative in 1858. Lincoln had drawn on Campbell in 1856 for ``between $200 and $300.'' Campbell did not answer Lincoln's query until August 2, explaining that he had hoped to make some collections but had been unsuccessful and therefore could not advance any money at the time, though he hoped to be able to send $50 later on (DLC-RTL).
