Endorsement: Edward D. Baker to John M. Clayton1Jump to section
Private & confidential
I have heard the foregoing letter of Col. Baker read; and from a long personal & intimate acquaintance with him, if the plan he proposes is at all practicable, I think, he would be the very man to execute it. [Your Obt. Servt. A. LINCOLN2Jump to section]
Hon. J. M. Clayton.
Annotation
[1] AE, DLC-John M. Clayton Papers. Baker wrote from Louisville, Kentucky, on March 20, 1849, proposing that a reliable Whig should be sent to California to assist in organizing the territory and gaining its admission to the Union ``at once,'' as a Whig state. He set forth his own qualifications and expressed his willingness to go.
