[1]   Certified copy, ICU. Lincoln's endorsement was written on the bottom of Baker's letter to Wilcox, March 14, 1849, which stated ``We desire this to stand as our recommendation of your appointment to a Pursership in the Navy.'' The original document has not been located; on December 9, 1865, it was in the possession of Wilcox. Certification of the copy, dated February 23, 1861, is signed by W. W. Lester, acting chief clerk, Department of the Interior.
