Annotation

[1]   Illinois State Register, June 12, 1856. This is the only report available. In spite of the political obfuscation of the Register, it is possible to trace dimly the thread of Lincoln's argument.

[2]   William L. Garrison and Frederick Douglass, celebrated Negro orator and abolitionist who had escaped from slavery.

[3]   The Republican state ticket was as follows: William H. Bissell, for governor; Francis A. Hoffman, for lieutenant governor (a native of Germany lacking the requisite fourteen years of citizenship, he was later replaced by John Wood of Adams County); James Miller, for treasurer; Ozias M. Hatch, for secretary of state; Jesse K. Dubois, for auditor; William H. Powell, for superintendent of public instruction.
