Annotation

[1]   Illinois State Journal, May 10, 1856. Of one hundred and twenty-nine signers, the names of Lincoln and Herndon head the list. Herndon had signed for Lincoln, who was attending court at Pekin, Illinois. When Lincoln's conservative friends protested, Herndon wrote Lincoln and received a telegram sanctioning his act (Herndon, II, 382).
