[1]   ALS, DLC-Caton Papers. John D. Caton was a judge on the Illinois Supreme Court.

[2]   Clifton H. Moore, an attorney at Clinton, Illinois, wrote Judge Caton on March 24 enclosing the record and asking a writ of error and supersedeas. Moore and Lincoln were associated in a number of cases as attorneys for the Illinois Central.
