Annotation

[1]   ALS-IHi. Leonard Swett began the practice of law at Clinton and later removed to Bloomington, where he was at this time. He had become recognized as one of the leading attorneys of the Eighth Judicial Circuit and was more or less closely associated with Lincoln from this time forward.

[2]   The Reverend John S. Barger was a prominent Methodist and one of the founders of Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington.
