[1]   ALS, owned by Miss Paula Angle, Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln's note is written on the back of Adams' letter to Lincoln, November 1, 1854. For further information on this case, see previous letters to Adams and to Thomas J. Turner.

[2]   Judge Onslow Peters, before whom the deed in question had been executed, according to Adams. Adams maintained he was not present himself, and suggested that Peters could verify the fact.
