To Henry E. Dummer [1]

Dear Dummer: [January 23? 1849]

Your letter was received by me; and a copy of the body of it sent to the P.O.D. Then came the above & accompanying, which you will readily understand A. LINCOLN

[1]   ALS, owned by Rev. Thomas W. Smith, San Carlos, California. This note is written on the bottom of a letter from R. A. Lacey of the Post Office Department Appointment Office, dated January 22, 1849. Lacey requests Lincoln to transmit enclosures concerning appointment of a new postmaster at Beardstown, Illinois, to ``some neighboring Postmaster---or other reliable person,'' who will notify citizens to send in expressions of their wishes concerning a new appointment.
