Affidavit Concerning Joseph Newman1Jump to section
This day came before me the Hon. A. Lincoln and Oliver Dieffendorf2Jump to section and made oath that they were well acquainted with Joseph Newman, deceased, who was a private in Col. Baker's regiment of Illinois volunteers who died in Mexico, in Battle, and also with Henry Newman, his father, of Sangamon County, Ill. They state that the deceased was very young, and never married, to the best of their knowledge and belief.
A. LINCOLN.

[1] DS as advertised by F. H. Sweet, List No. 52 (1939), No. 109. The only text available; may be incomplete. Vide supra, endorsement concerning Joseph Newman, December [14?] 1848.
[2] Oliver Dieffendorf, resident of Springfield, was commissioned first lieutenant in Company D, Fourth Illinois Infantry, under Colonel Edward D. Baker. Presumably Dieffendorf and Lincoln appeared together at the War Department to give testimony.
