[2] On July 3, the Illinois Supreme Court held invalid the act of the legislature (February 11, 1851) by which Gallatin and Saline counties were united making Equality the county seat. The Saline County Court, claiming the act to be unconstitutional, had applied for a mandamus to compel Samuel S. Marshall, the circuit judge, to hold the regular term of court at Raleigh in Saline County.
