Annotation

[1]   Chicago Weekly Journal, August 5, 1850; also in Chicago Daily Journal, July 27, 1850.

[2]   November 24 is the correct date. The haste with which Lincoln was forced to prepare his eulogy and the unreliable data in the 1848 biographies are to blame for Lincoln's errors. In later paragraphs, where Lincoln follows closely Taylor's own reports and dispatches as printed in Niles' Register and the House Executive Documents, his accuracy improves.

[3]   Zachary Taylor was not the second, but the third son of Richard Taylor.
