[1] AD, I-Ar. The bill was passed on February 2 as written and appears in Laws of the State of Illinois, 1835, p. 103. A copy made by Lincoln and forwarded to the Sangamon County Commissioners Court is also extant (IHi).
[2] Of these three friends of Lincoln's---all from New Salem vicinity---Reuben Harrison was the surveyor of New Salem and John Clary was the founder of nearby Clary's Grove. They were sworn in as commissioners on March 16.
