Annotation
[1] ALS-P, ISLA. A notation on the top of the first page, in Herndon's handwriting, reads as follows: ``Not to be published---Herndon.'' Nicolay and Hay included the letter in the Complete Works (II, 26), but erroneously addressed it to Archibald Williams, probably as the result of a faulty copy. Hertz (II, 573) later printed the letter correctly addressed.
