[1] Sangamo Journal, August 8, 1844. Brodie was killed on August 3 when struck by the fall of a derrick with which a Liberty Pole was being raised for the Whig rally scheduled on that day. The Whig Liberty Pole, 214 feet 6 inches high, was erected on August 23.
