[1]   Sangamo Journal, March 15, 1834. Of the leading citizens of New Salem taking part in the meeting, Bowling Green was an influential Democrat and close friend of Lincoln's; Dr. John Allen, graduate of Dartmouth, was a leading physician and religious leader in the community; Nelson Alley operated a tavern; Samuel Hill was the principal merchant.

[2]   Formerly sheriff of Sangamon County and Black Hawk War hero, General Henry died in New Orleans on March 5, following this meeting.
