Bill Introduced in Illinois Legislature
to Authorize the Collector of --- County to Collect Taxes1Jump to section

[December 10, 1839]

A bill for an act to authorize the Collector of county to collect certain taxes therein named.

Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in the General Assembly, that the collector of county be authorized to collect all taxes now due from the inhabitants of that portion of Sangamon county lying within the following bounds towit: Begining at the South West corner of Section Three in Township Seventeen North of Range Six West thence North four miles by the surveys, thence East with the surveys ten miles; thence South with the surveys two miles; thence West with the surveys nine miles; thence South with the surveys two miles; then West with the surveys one mile to the begining.

Annotation

[1]   AD, I-Ar. Although drawn specifically to collect taxes due in a portion of Sangamon County which had not been incorporated in Menard as anticipated, Lincoln left the name of the county blank so that the committee to which the bill was referred might decide which county (Sangamon or Menard) collector should function. The bill was referred to a select committee with Lincoln as chairman. The bill as amended appears under an amended title, January 28-30, 1840, infra.
