Petition to Governor Thomas Carlin
for Appointment of Joseph Duncan to Negotiate Sale of Illinois and Michigan Canal Bonds1Jump to section

[April 13, 1839]

The undersigned would respectfully recommend to the Governor of this State the appointment of JOSEPH DUNCAN, who is well known to have ever been an ardent and efficient friend of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, as a suitable and qualified person to negotiate the sale of the State Bonds authorised to be sold for the purpose of constructing the Illinois and Michigan Canal.

Annotation

[1]   Quincy Whig, April 13, 1839. The petition carries one hundred and seven names of prominent Whigs (65) and democrats (42). Duncan was an ex-governor (1834) and a Whig. Governor Carlin had appointed ex-governor John Reynolds by the time the editorial including this protest appeared in print.
