[1]   AL, ICHi. Lincoln wrote the letter, probably at Baker's dictation, and Baker signed and addressed it. For the circumstances under which Baker wrote,

Although it is impossible to conjecture Butler's charges in detail, it is evident that they had to do with the controversial division of Sangamon County (see Lincoln's bill, January 16-19, supra), and Lincoln's letter to Butler (infra) illuminates the charges in part.
