Remarks in Illinois Legislature
Concerning Resolutions in Relation to Fugitive Slaves1Jump to section
Mr Lincoln, on the first reading of the resolutions, had inclined to vote in favor of concurring; but upon the second, he felt that he wanted more time for deliberation. He now thought it would be better to postpone the subject indefinitely; and accordingly, made a motion to this effect.
Annotation
[1] Vandalia Free Press, January 10, 1839. The first resolution condemned the Governor of Maine for refusing to deliver two citizens accused of kidnapping a slave in Georgia, by condemning all such state executives. The second resolved that the citizens of non-slaveholding states ought not to interfere with the domestic relations of slaveholding states. Consideration of the resolutions was postponed.
